Nothing defines a female’s hourglass figure like well proportioned, beautifully projected buttocks. A narrow waist with a full, rounded bottom indicates youth and beauty. The buttocks play a prominent and important role in sexuality and physical attraction. The ideal shape, size and contour of the buttocks vary across cultures and ethnicities. Even though the exact ideal for buttocks differs, several characteristics are prominent across all cultures, such as a preference for buttocks that are well rounded with smooth contours.
Several options exist to improve the appearance of the buttocks:
Autologous Fat Grafting (also known as Buttocks Fat Transfer, “Brazilian Butt Lift” or “BBL”)
This method utilizes your own fat obtained through liposuction of another area of your body, typically the abdomen, love handles or thighs. The harvested fat is then transferred into the buttocks to provide a more rounded, fuller contour. Risks of Fat Grafting include infection, fat or blood clots, fat necrosis and contour irregularities.
Nonsurgical Butt Lift with Sculptra
Sculptra has long been used as a facial volumizer, working by increasing your collagen production. Now doctors are using Sculptra to augment the buttocks. This is particularly useful in patients who don’t have enough fat for a Brazilian Butt Lift. It is much more natural looking and feeling than a silicone implant and gives your butt lift and shape without the need for downtime or surgery. Two injection sessions can get you a result that will last for two or more years.
Buttocks Implants or Prostheses
This method has been used for several years. As with breast implants, the solid silicone implants are placed under the skin where they will not be visible. Most surgeons will place the implants within the muscle layer. Patients have reported an abnormal or unnatural feel to the implants and movement or displacement of buttocks implants has been reported.
Suspension Threads for Buttocks
Threads have been used with mixed results. They may provide lift without any gain in the size or fullness of the buttocks. Drawbacks can include asymmetry, displacement, distortion and indentations. Also, because of the weight of the muscle, rupture of the threads and sagging of the buttocks are fairly common complications.
Several options exist to help you to achieve more beautiful, shapely buttocks. As with any surgical procedure, your results are directly influenced by the skills, knowledge and experience of your surgeon. We would encourage you to ask many questions and ask to see before and after photos of patients previously treated by your surgeon.
